In 2017-2019, the members of the Strategic Alliance under the leadership of Ukrasa Energy implemented the basic design of Titanium Slag Production Plant The scope of the design work.

In accordance with preliminary tests of both concentrates by the sulphate method, a titanium dioxide pigment was successfully obtained in compliance with the requirements.
Results of chemical analysis of titanium slag samples of the smelting tests No. 2 and 10

Decomposition of slag in sulphuric acid
1. For the purpose of studying the recoverability of titanium slag obtained as a result of smelting test using Iranian ilmenite concentrate, the samples of slag were taken from the smelts No. 2 and No. 10.
2. Basis for choosing the slag from the specified smelting tests was:
- Content of TiO2 in slags for sulphate processing of global manufacturers below 80%, mainly 74-76%;
- Slag of the smelting test No 2 had a lower TiO2 content (74%) and a higher FeO content (4.76%); it was used as a reference to show that such a slag had been more preferable for decomposition using the acid; obtaining slag with such composition was not set as the goal of tests with a given content of TiO2 ≥ 80%; therefore, it was obtained during preliminary smelts
- Slag of the smelting test No. 10 met the limit minimum content of TiO2 (at the request of the client)
Conclusions
• The main physical and chemical properties of ilmenite concentrate and anthracite were studied.
• A theoretical calculation of the amount of concentrate and anthracite per smelting test, amount and composition of smelting products was carried out.
• 10 smelting tests were carried out using a single-phase electric arc furnace with a capacity of 150 kVA to produce titanium slag and metal (one smelting test was performed using a preheated concentrate). Titanium slag with titanium dioxide content over 80% was obtained
• In the course of smelting tests, dust and gas measurements with dust sampling were carried out. The composition and dust content of process gases in various periods of smelting were determined.
• Chemical analysis of titanium slag, associated metal and dust trapped in gases was performed.
• Based on the smelting tests, the specific and expected industrial indicators of the titanium slag production were calculated, and guaranteed production indicators were determined.
• Studies were carried out on the recoverability in sulphuric acid for two samples of titanium slag with different contents of titanium dioxide. TiO2 yield factor was determined.
• The calculation and justification of the water consumption for cooling the main process equipment during titanium slag production using an electric arc furnace with a capacity of 30 MVA were carried out.
According to the results of the tests, the basic design of the titanium slag production plant was implemented.

• Ore minerals - ilmenite and titanomagnetite in equal amounts with an insignificant prevailing of titanomagnetite - 13.8% versus 12.9% of ilmenite
• Apatite 5.0 %
• Iron sulphides in ore, max 1.3 %
• Iron hydroxides 3.0 %
• Olivines and pyroxenes being rock-forming minerals 31.1 %
• Plagioclase 32.9 %
For the purpose of determining the content of the main chemical components of ore minerals (ilmenite, titanomagnetite), a microprobe analysis was carried out for a number of ore samples.
However, studies have shown that the mineral composition of the ore may be different within the deposit. When sampling from the upper horizons, an increased content of rock-forming minerals was observed due to plagioclase, as well as increased oxidation of ores.
On the basis of the studies carried out for determining beneficiation ability of the composite core sample, two process flow diagrams for beneficiation of ore were proposed.
1. Flow diagram involving magnetic, flotation and electrostatic beneficiation processes
2. Flow diagram involving magnetic and flotation beneficiation processes
The main feature of these flow diagrams is the method of obtaining ilmenite concentrate. The first option proposes electrostatic separation; the second option involves flotation.
Characteristics of concentrates obtained during testing of ore samples, which were carried out according to the flow diagram involving magnetic, flotation and electrostatic beneficiation

In accordance with preliminary tests of both concentrates by the sulphate method, a titanium dioxide pigment was successfully obtained in compliance with the requirements.
Titanium dioxide values obtained according to the results of laboratory tests:
- Weight percent of titanium dioxide 99.2%
- Weight percent of rutile form 97 %
- Weight percent of volatiles 0.2 %
- pH of the aqueous suspension 8.0
- Whitening ability 1540 nom. units
- Covering power 38 g/m2
- Whiteness 94 nom. units
